Ukraine’s acting President: Authorities lose control of situation in Donetsk region

Authorities do not control the situation in Donetsk, acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov said this at the meeting with chairmen of regional state administrations in Kyiv.

He said that the situation in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions is the most dangerous.

Earlier, the Ukrainian armed forces were put on combat alert due to the threat of Russia’s starting hostilities against Ukraine. According to Oleksandr Turchynov, there must be no spread of terrorism from Donetsk and Luhansk regions to other eastern and southern regions of the country, in particular Odesa and Kharkiv regions.

The developments in eastern Ukraine demonstrate the inactivity, helplessness and sometimes “criminal betrayal” of the law enforcement agencies in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Mr Turchinov said. He also ordered thorough reshuffling in law enforcement services in eastern Ukraine.

On April 29, pro-Russian separatists took control of the regional administration building in Luhansk, adding to their tally of occupied government buildings in Ukraine’s east. Local police stood by as the insurgents, backed by a crowd of about 3,000 protesters, seized the building. armed pro-Russian men in camouflage and masks stormed and seized the Horlivka city council building just as dawn broke around 5 am.
