Armed pro-Russian separatists seize Donetsk council building, press for referendum

At least 20 pro-Russian separatists took control of the city council building in eastern Ukraine city of Donetsk.

According to local website, these people are having white armbands bearing inscriptions ‘ОПЛОТ’ [Stronghold] in red. They did not prevent the council officials from taking documents and equipment out of the building

‘We have come to the council and demand to hold a referendum. We want the people to make their choice themselves. We are for federalisation. The referendum will definitely be held on May 11. In each coucil of Donetsk region there are people who have similar views on the issue,’ Alexander Zakharchenko, head of organisation ‘Stronghold’ in Donetsk, said.

According to Mr Zakharchenko, his fellowthinkers are ready to storm administrative buildings of the town of Yenakiyevo.

At that, there is no panic in the council. Mayor Alexander Lukyanchenko, the secretary of the councils, other officials are in the workplace. ‘Normal council meeting going on with armed men all around, weird,’ France 24 journalist Gulliver Cragg posted to Twitter.
