‘Firstly they delivered an ultimatum: I had to choose between my firm stand on the son’s case and the job. The choice was so absurd that I laughed in their face,’ Valiantsina Alinevich, the mother of political prisoner Ihar Alinevich, posted on her Facebook account.
‘The situation is a triumph of ugliness because I have been really mobbed for the last 1.5 months. At that, higher managers were absolutely frank declaring that although there was ‘a special order’ concerning me they did not hold it against my work,’ Mrs Alinevich stressed. According to the university authorities, everything published on the Internet or in the press is scrutinized and analysed, she added.
Ihar Alinevich was sentenced to 8 years of imprisonment in high-security correctional institutions being adjudged guilty of arsoning the Russian Embassy building in Minsk. He did not plead guilty to the charges. Mrs Alinevich repeatedly voiced support to her son, which might well have led to her ouster.
Valiantsina Alinevich is Candidate of economic sciences (PhD in Economics). She worked as Assistant Professor at Industrial Enterprises Economy Department of the Belarusian State Economic University (BSEU). She was given due warning that her work contract would not be renewed for the following academic year.
