Long-awaited meeting: Bialiatski feels all right

Natallia Pinchuk visited her husband, political prisoner Ales Bialiatski in Babruysk penal colony No 2.
According to Natallia Pinchuk, their meeting lasted two hours: they were talking about family matters and friends. “Ales said he feels all right, he is in a tranquil frame of mind. But we had to speak on the phone looking at each other through a glass wall, our conversation being listened to,” she said.
on May 18 Natallia Pinchuk had a long-term meeting with her husband. Two later meetings were cancelled. Another visit to the colony is unlikely to take place till April 2013.
Ales Bialiatski, Vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights, was sentenced to 4.5 years of imprisonment and seizure of property for alleged tax evasion. The fact of his holding bank accounts in Poland and Lithuania gave the grounds for criminal prosecution. The cash standing to the credit of accounts was used for human rights defence activity: the centre financially supported the people affected by Lukashenka’s regime. In court Bialiatski stated that he had no other possibility of getting financial aid from foreign backers.
