Since August 9, the journalistic community of Belarus has been experiencing an unprecedented level of pressure and repression from the state. Seven journalists remain behind bars at the time of publication.

Homiel-based reporter Yauhen Mеrkis was to be released today, but he will remain in custody for another 12 days.

The journalist was detained on September 14 along with his colleague Maryna Drabysheuskaya.
