A group of more than 30 MEPs has addressed top EU officials, urging to review and expand the list of sanctions against Belarusian officials and companies involved in curtailing human and democratic rights during this election campaign, Lithuanian politician Petras Austrevicius said on Twitter.

On July 1, people gathered in the centre of Brussels to express solidarity with Belarusians and protest against the persecution of politicians and civil society activists in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election.

The election campaign has seemingly started off with a nationwide crackdown on peaceful protesters and civil society activists, MEP Robert Biedroń, Chair of the EP’s Delegation for relations with Belarus, and MEP Petras Auštrevičius, the EP’s Standing Rapporteur on Belarus, said in a joint statement.
