Some EU member country made attempts to prevent the Belarusian national air carrier Belavia from being sanctioned by the European Union, Delfi.lt reports with reference to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis.

On Friday, the Belarusian national air carrier Belavia has announced pulling the plug on transporting Iraqi, Syrian, Yemeni nationals through Turkey to Belarus on the back of the latest decision taken by Ankara.

Belarus is the last country of the former Soviet Union to celebrate October Revolution Day on November 7.

The fifth package of sanctions against the Lukashenka regime will be primarily levelled against individuals and companies responsible for smuggling migrants from the Middle East and Africa to the European Union through the territory of Belarus, Deutsche Welle reports with reference to Dirk Schuebel, Head of the EU Delegation to Belarus.

This is done “to solve the migration issue”.

EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs are meeting on Monday in Luxembourg. Today’s Foreign Affairs Council is chaired by Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Among others, the participants are expected to discuss the Belarusian issue; according to Borrell, the Eastern Partnership ‘continues being troubled by Belarus’.

The EU leadership, together with the EU member states, is working on the fifth package of sanctions against the Belarusian regime amid the current migration crisis egged on by Alyaksandr Lukashenka and his cronies.
