Brest resident Andrey Sharenda, who was charged under two criminal articles, has left the country, human rights centere Viasna reports. A few weeks ago, his wife, local activist Palina Sharenda-Panasyuk, was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment.

On Monday, Brest-based political prisoner Andrey Sharenda did not appear before court. He was expected to stand trial today. A few weeks ago, his wife Palina was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment. Andrey and Palina are parents to two minor kids (11 and 4 years old).

Andrey Sharenda is accused of slander of the president of Belarus (Article 367 of the Criminal Code). The maximum penalty under this article is five years of imprisonment.

On Monday, Maskouski district court of Brest has started to hear the case of Palina Sharenda-Panasyuk, a Brest activist and mother of two minor children. The woman was arrested in her own apartment five months ago.

Official charges have been levelled against Brest-based activist Palina Sharenda-Panasyuk, our local correspondent reports. The young mother has been held in pre-trial detention centre Nr 7 for over four months.

On January 6, a Brest judge Ina Klyshpach pronounced the verdict on the Brest activist Andrei Sharenda.
