Zelensky urges US to join Normandy format


During a meeting with John Bolton, Donald Trump’s national security advisor, Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that the United States would more actively join the negotiation process on Donbasm, the website of the Ukrainian president reports.

Zelensky said that Ukraine would welcome the United States joining the “Normandy format”. The Normandy format is an international group working on the settlement of the situation in Donbas. It currently includes Ukraine, Russia, Germany, and France.

The Ukrainian presidential press service said that the meeting between Zelensky and Bolton was primarily devoted to the discussion of measures to strengthen the strategic partnership between Ukraine and the United States. In particular, they spoke of the preparation of bilateral talks at the level of heads of state. The sides discussed cooperation between Ukraine and the USA in the sphere of security, energy, as well as the reform of the Ukrainian army and defense industry.

Zelensky thanked the American side for its support of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, including in the case of Crimea and Donbas.

John Bolton arrived in Kyiv on an official visit on August 27. He is also scheduled to visit Belarus this week and meet with Alyaksandr Lukashenka.
