You’ll always be second-rate there - Lukashenka to Belarusians studying abroad

Belarusian youth’s strive for studying abroad is a troubling sign, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka said at Friday’s meeting with university students in Hrodna.

“It is even worse if talented young people go abroad after graduating from a university in Belarus or if they get education abroad and stay behind. I am not trying to persuade or dissuade (…) It’s up to you. However, I advise you to take time and decide what will be a better place for you,” he said.

In his view, newcomers from Belarus will never find themselves in elite groups in foreign countries.

“You will always be strangers there, those of second rate. If half of 2,000 [Belarusians] who study [abroad] settle there, it will not be a problem for the state. As the head of state, however, I would like them to study and work here [in Belarus],” he said.

According to information in our possession, even up to 10,000 young people may leave Belarus every year to study abroad.

Moreover, Alyaksandr Lukashenka is concerned over the issue of avoiding military service.

“If you dodge the draft today, I don’t know who you are going to marry after that. Today’s girls want a real man instead of someone simply wearing trousers. This is why I’ve been thinking about ways to train and make men out of the guys, who go to university. We give them a respite [for the duration of the university education] but once they graduate, they no longer want to join the army. They start looking for various ways [to dodge the draft,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes him.

In his opinion, Belarusian university students should join the army for a couple of months during summer holidays in order to ‘get the smell of powder’.
