Yerevan: Protesters taking to streets again

The Armenian opposition has resumed protests against the current government in Yerevan. A Belsat TV crew is reporting from the scene.

The Elk movement memebers are blocking the main streets of the Armenian capital by creating traffic jams. The police are pulling up anti-riot vehicles to the city center.

On Wednesday morning the talks between protest leader Nicol Pashinyan and acting Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan were to have taken place.

The meeting was disrupted due to Pashinyan’s unilateral putting forward new demands on its holding and procedure, Karapetyan states.

According to Pashinyan, the Republican Party of Armenia should be removed from power. He says that the first stage of the r’revolution’ has resulted in the resignation of Serzh Sargsyan, but the opposition also insists on the next prime minister candidate’s being fully supported by people and holding early parliamentary elections.

In turn, Karapetyan said that a new prime minister must be elected in accordance with the law, not ‘in the street’.

Just for one night, Pashinyan managed to mobilise thousands of people who are now marching along downtown Yerevan.

Prosperous Armenia and Heritage parties have also joined the protests. They are calling on their supporters to take to the streets and ‘be with the nation’.
