The case of Viktor Yanukovych might stop to be politicized under Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s rule, the defense lawyers of the ousted Ukrainian president believe.
The lawyers, who are appealing against the sentence, are also set to seek the withdrawal of all charges. According to them, Yanukovich’s rights should be observed no matter what position the newly elected president of Ukraine will take.
“Indeed, Viktor Yanukovych has intentions to return [to Ukraine]. And we have been working on this since the early days of our struggle for his rights. Zelenskiy’s victory factors into neither Viktor Yanukovych desire nor our work: we fought and will fight. As you know, Viktor Yanukovych’s stay in the territory of the Russian Federation is temporary and forced,” defense lawyer Vitaly Serdyuk told the Russian newspaper Izvestia.
In January, a Kyiv court found former president Viktor Yanukovych guilty of treason and complicity in an aggressive war Russia is waging against Ukraine. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
