How Belarus met Olympic champion in swimming

Belarusians rolled out the red carpet for swimmer Alyaksandra Herasimenya, a bronze Olympic medallist, at Minsk airport.

“I have not realized yet that I have such a wonderful thing – a medal. And I am still impressed by the warm welcome,” Herasimenya said.

This is the second success at Olympics for the 30-year-old swimmer. Four years ago Alyaksandra won silver in London.

“If at 2012 Olympics I was just very pleased but did not believe that ordinary people can achieve this, now I am sure they can. The past four years were hard for me, and I am very happy that this period ended up in success,” says Aksana Herasimenya, the champion’s mother and coach.

In Rio, Alyaksandra Herasimenya showed a better result than before – 24.11 seconds, which is the new women’s 50 metres record in Belarus.

“She is very determined and self-rigorous. I am very proud of her,” the champion’s first coach Volha Yaskevich says.

By the moment, Belarusian athletes have won 5 medals: Hancharou’s gold in jumping on a trampoline, two silvers in weightlifting and two bronze medals (wrestling and swimming). But Belarus’ leadership is not satisfied.

“The results of some athletes are worse than those they showed at qualification. The question is what for they went to Olympics?”president Alyaksandr Lukashenka said.
