Would Lukashenka agree to become Union State prime minister?

The Kremlin offered the seat of the Union State prime minister to Alyaksandr Lukashenka, Nikolai Svanidze, a well-known Russian journalist and public figure, said with reference to his sources in government circles.

Under such scenario, the both presidents’ terms of office would be canceled and Putin could continue ruling Russia.

“A new proposal from our side, the Kremlin, is on Batska’s table [Batska (Father) – Lukashenka’s nickname which is popular with Russians] . And supposedly, bargaining is in progress… In particular, Batska may become Prime Minister of the Union State,” he said.

Making a comment on the statement, Belarusian political analyst Alyaksandr Klaskouski stressed that Russian media had been spreading many fake stories and news over the recent years. He recommends users to take a source’s reliability into account. According to the expert, Svanidze does have authority.

“I do not think [the Russian authorities] use him as their yes-man,” Klaskouski stressed.

In his opinion, whatever the Kremlin offered, it would be a worse option for Lukashenka.

“He has been at the helm for about 25 years. He has everything he wants. Even if he were the second person in the new state, he would become Putin’s subordinate and a cog in the machine. And he might be booted at any moment. Under any pretext, he might be forced to retire or even jailed,” the expert believes.
