Women take up smoking, while men give it up


Belstat has noted the fall in the of number of smokers in Belarus. Men are increasingly giving up on the bad habit.

According to research by the National Statistics Committee, 24.4% of the Belarusian population smoke. It is the best figure in the last 15 years. Currently, almost 46% of men smoke tobacco. Compared with 2000, their number decreased by about 8%.

Meanwhile, in the last 15 years, the number of women smokers almost doubled to 9.3%.

The Ministry of Health aims to keep this momentum and has initiated appropriate changes in legislation. On July 1, new rules allowing for cigarettes to be taken away from the the eyes of chain cigarette smokers come into force. According to the plan of the Ministry of Health, all tobacco products will disappear from the shop windows for good. Instead of seeing cigarette packs above cash registers, you will only see the inscriptions with the names and price.
