On Wednesday, several hundred women stood in a chain, holding hands, near the Kamarouski market. They went out in Uruchcha, Minsk, Hrodna and Navapolatsk. This way women speak out against the beating and torture of peaceful picketers.
In Minsk at about 11 o’clock women stood in human chain near the Kamarouski market. Women were dressed in white clothes and had flowers. They stood in silence, holding hands. This is how women spoke out against the violence that has been spreading in Belarusian cities for three days. Every night, even despite the poor internet, thousands of people have been detained who just want their votes counted pproperly. They started coming out immediately after the August 9 election. People, peaceful picketers, were detained, beaten and kidnapped. The whereabouts of many people is still unknown.
At first, about 100 women lined up near the market. Then the number doubled.
“We want to show peacefully that Belarusians are peaceful people, and that we want to know the real results, how many votes the candidates received,” says another participant of the picket.
“We were inspired by women who created a joint headquarters. This is an example of strong women who have put themselves at risk. We want to express solidarity with them. And yet we see what happens in the evenings. It’s painful and scary. That’s why we came out to protest against such cruel acts,” says another participant.
The women held a spontaneous march along Independence Avenue. Cars were signalling and passers-by clapping their hands. The group reached the Kastrychnik cinema, turned around the Botanical Garden and went back to Kolasa Square. This is the most peaceful protest.
