Belarus may take part in the program for the resettlement of Syrian refugees who are now in the European Union. This opinion was expressed in Homiel by representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Belarus Jean-Yves Bouchardy.
“Your country may get a new program developed for it that will cover not only the Homiel region, but the whole of Belarus. This may be 50 or maybe 100 refugees from Syria,” he said.
Now Homiel region has three families of refugees from Syria living there. Jacques-Yves Bouchardy will meet with refugees and see how effectively they are being integrated into the Belarusian society.
According to the European official, at the end of March 2016, there will be a high level meeting, with one of the objectives being to urge governments to share the burden of responsibility and care for the displaced migrants. Belarus will also be one of the participants of the event.
