What gas floating over Grodno Azot? Senior staff silent after incident

On Thursday morning rumors about another accident at Grodno Azot, Belarus’ leading producer of nitrogen compounds and fertilizers, started to swirl on the Internet: a yellow-brown cloud was seen over one of its shops. The press service of the enterprise has denied the allegations.

According to the press service of Grodno Azot JSC,  on June 16 at 9:00, routine technical activities were in progress in the shop of nitric acid and liquid nitrogen fertilizers. As a result, the equipment partially stopped (at that, the shop operation was not interrupted) and some working areas became gassy.

Belsat.eu contacted Grodno Azot top managers and asked them what gas was the case.

Deputy Director General Mikhail Krauchanka failed to answer our question saying that he is not a qualified chemist. Acting Chief Engineer Aleh Karpovich was meeting with some delegation and could not provide necessary information.

According to Svyatlana Sobal, Head of Grodno Azot sanitary lab, any information about the composition of the gas over the plant is confidential and can only be provided by Chief Engineer or Director General. The latter – Kanstantsin Mayanau, was too busy to answer the journalist’ s question.

“If a serious accident had occured, there would be sort of fuss here. Nothing has happened. People are working. Nobody was allowed to go, home,” a representative of the Department of Nature Protection Company told belsat.eu

As reported before, on 6 June a major accident happened at Grodno Azot with two people dead and two injured. After the explosion, Lithuania had the Neman water samples tested.
