On April 10, Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has held the meeting to discuss the draft decree ‘On the repayment of expenses attributed to the supply of electricity to the housing stock’.
The draft decree was prepared to encourage more people to use electricity for heating, hot water supply and cooking in one-apartment houses. According to him, it is necessary to stimulate electricity consumptions instead of those of natural gas.
“Additional volumes of electricity will emerge after the commissioning of the nuclear power plant. As I was frequently saying, we need to consume more electricity because we will even have it in abundance (if we continue using the existing capacities and introduce new ones),” the presidential press service quotes Lukashenka.
Belarus will be less dependent on natural gas; the consumption will be reduced by 5 bn cubic metres, he stated.
“There will be certain, we can say, preferences and requirements to the population: if you do not fulfill any terms, you will not get preferences and your tariffs for electricity will be higher,” Alyaksandr Lukashenka stressed.
At the same time, the Belarusian leader warned the officials against forcing people to join the initiative.
The would-be Belarusian NPP with two VVER-1200 reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 MW is being built according to the Russian project near Astravets in Hrodna region. The first power unit is scheduled for 2020, the second second one will be launched in 2021. The public keep being concerned over the unavailability of information about everything that happens at and around the site. It is expected that the NPP will send its used nuclear fuel to Russia, but it will be stored in Belarus for about 10 years before the shipment.
