Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin arrives in Belarus


Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin came to Minsk on a three-day official visit on March 12.  He arrived in the Belarusian capital by a regular flight.

On the arrival, Cardinal Pietro Parolin talked to journalists. He noted that his visit to Belarus as a representative of His Holiness the Pope is a sign of recognition of the country, the Belarusian people, and the Catholic Church in Belarus by the Vatican.

Pietro Parolin pointed out that Belarus had become an important negotiations platform on solving the conflict in the east of Ukraine. The diplomat expressed Vatican’s hopes for the settlement of the crisis.

During his visit to Belarus on 12-15 March, Cardinal Pietro Parolin is scheduled to meet with government officials, members of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Belarus, and Belarusian Catholics and to consecrate the first stone of the new building of the Apostolic Nunciature in Minsk.

Talking to Pietro Parolin, president Alyaksandr Lukashenka stressed that ‘Belarus maintains interfaith peace and accord’.

On Friday the Cardinal has met with Orthodox Metropolitan Pavel, Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus. The main issue of the conversation was ‘the preservation of spiritual and moral values’.
