US Secretary of State to visit Belarus in early January


U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has confirmed his visit to Minsk on Twitter. He will arrive in Minsk on January 4 next year.

Excited to travel to Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Cyprus in the new year to meet with counterparts and affirm U.S. priorities across #Europe and South Central Asia.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the visit will take place on January 4 and will involve meetings with President Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey, TUT.by reports.

“We are preparing for this event in contact with the American side. The working visit of the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Belarus is scheduled for January 4. The current program includes high-level talks, a meeting with Foreign Minister of Belarus Uladzimir Makey and other events. It is expected that the whole range of issues of Belarusian-American relations and regional security will be discussed,” said Foreign Ministry spokesman Anatol Hlaz.

On December 26, the official visit of U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Belarus was reported by the Foreign Policy. U.S. Secretary of State will come to Minsk for the first time in the history of Belarusian-American relations.

Earlier, on August 29 this year, former U.S. presidential adviser on national security John Bolton paid an official visit to Belarus. In Minsk, he met with Alyaksandr Lukashenka. The conversation between the head of Belarus and the U.S. presidential advisor on national security lasted more than two hours. Bolton called the meeting “very important,” although he and Lukashenka “never came with any specific solutions”.
