Washington expanded the sanctions lists against Russia for “continuously ignoring international norms.” This statement was made by the US Treasury. 18 individuals and four information resources have been subjected to restrictive measures.
The sanctions are expanded by the United States in response to the interference of Russian citizens in the course of American election processes, cyber attacks on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and “other malicious activity.” At the same time, it is specified that “the attempted murder in the United Kingdom” of Sergey Skripal and his daughter Yulia are included in such activities.
According to the US financial department, 15 Russian military intelligence officers are blacklisted.
Alexey Morenets and Yevgeny Serebryakov, who are accused of involvement in cyber attacks on WADA and the OPCW in 2016, fell under restrictive measures.
“From 2016 to 2018, Russia committed cyber attacks against the World Anti-Doping Agency, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and other international non-profit organizations,” the statement said.
In addition, Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, suspected of poisoning former GRU Colonel Sergei Skripal and his daughter, were on the US sanctions list.
Among other things, four Russian information resources were blacklisted by the United States. These are the Nevskie Novosti news agency, the Federal News Agency online publication, the FBA Economy Today and the English-language online publication USA Really. According to the US authorities, the resources “intended to interfere in political and electoral systems around the world” in the framework of the so-called Project Lakhta, funded by Yevgeny Prigozhin and his companies Concord Catering and Concord Management. The latter are already blacklisted, as well as Prigozhin.
In addition, the list included Elena Khusyaynova, who in October, the US Justice Department charged with trying to influence the political processes in the United States.
