Ukrainian consul: Savchenko already showing signs of hunger strike

Nadiya Savchenko is already showing the effects of a “dry” hunger strike, which she announced last week as a protest against the Russian court rejecting her final word. The meeting was adjourned, told the Consul of Ukraine in Rostov-on-Don Alexander Kovtun.

Kovtun said that during the meeting with Savchenko he saw on her face the consequences of dry hunger strike, including dry lips and paleness.

At the same time, the consul added, Savchenko continues to show strength of will and determination. According to Koltun, Savchenko came down in the room for jail meetings, she moved normally.

The Consul said Nadiya Savchenko expects to be present in court on March 9 and will deliver a speech.

Earlier, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said that the Ukrainian Consul visited Savchenko in jail and told him about the state of her health. However, the Ukrainian president did not reveal any details of this matter.

Savchenko announced a hunger strike on March 3. This way she protested against the delay of the trial — this is how Savchenko regarded the unexpected decision of the judge to move her last word to the March 9.

Shortly after Savchenko started a dry hunger strike, her speech was posted on her Facebook page.

Russian investigators accused Ukrainian pilot of involvement in the deaths of two Russian journalists in the Luhansk region of Ukraine in 2014.

The investigation claims that Savchenko adjusted the mortar fire that killed Russians.

Savchenko denies the accusations. Her defense insists that the pilot had been captured before the Russian journalists were killed.

Moreover, Savchenko said that she was taken to the territory of Russia by force. Rallies of solidarity with Ukrainian were held over the weekend in many countries, including Belarus. On March 9, another rally in support of Savchenko is to take place at the Russian embassy in Minsk.
