Ukraine says joint application to host Olympics with Belarus possible

The Ukrainian government does not rule out that Ukraine and Belarus may submit a joint application to host the Olympics, Ukrainian Prime Minister Oleksiy Honcharuk said at a meeting of the Organizing Committee for the preparation and participation of Ukrainian athletes in the Olympics in Tokyo, RBC-Ukraine reports.

Last July, Volodymyr Zelensky announced his intention to hold the Olympics in Ukraine. On October 4, during the II Forum of Regions in Zhytomyr, Alyaksandr Lukashenka noted that Belarus and Ukraine could jointly submit an application to host the Olympic Games.

“In my opinion, this idea really deserves deep study,” Honcharuk stressed at the meeting of the Organizing Committee on 11 February. “The government is now working to study this situation from different points of view and offer a concept to our partners if this initiative can be implemented soon. This is an important and responsible image step. Such large-scale projects contribute to infrastructural renewal of the state, growth of tourist attractiveness and national prestige in the world as a whole”.

Ukrainian Prime Minister instructed his colleagues to study the experience of Belarus in holding the II European Games and the experience of European countries in holding the Olympics and to develop a clear plan in accordance with the competitive requirements established by the International Olympic Committee.
