Ukraine considering visa regime with Russia

Secretary of Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, Oleksandr Turchynov, expressed hope that visa regime with Russia will be implemented in early 2016.

In an interview to Ukrainian journalists Oleksandr Turchynov expressed his opinion on the transition to a new form of border control:

“I believe that in the next year we must introduce real and sufficiently strict visa control, visa regime with Russia.”

Head of the Security Council recalled that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was instructed to introduce a visa regime with Russia in 2014.

“The first stage has been implemented. As you know, Russian citizen can get in Ukraine only with a special passport,” said Turchynov.

When asked why the visa regime has not been introduced until now, Turchynov said that there is currently a large number of Ukrainians in Russia, and in the case of the introduction of the visa regime “there will be immediately actions from the Russian side.” According to Turchynov, this is what is holding back Ukraine.
