Ukraine blocks access to Russia’s social networks, media outlets


Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko authorized extending and introducing sanctions against Russia, which includes the blocking of access to Russian media outlets and social networks.

The order  enacted a decision taken by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) on April 28, 2017, on personal special economic and other restricting measures. The document came into force on May, 16.

467 legal entities and 1,228 individuals are put on the black list. The ban will be binding for three years.

From now on, the assess to Russian social media Vkontakte (vk.ru), Odnoklassniki (ok.ru) and most services of Yandex group will be denied in Ukraine. Moreover, the country’s Internet providers have been obliged to block access to Russia’s  e-mail service mail.ru,  anti-virus software developers Kaspersky Lab and DrWeb and 1C accounting software developer.

The sanctions were imposed against TV companies TV Center, RBC, NTV Plus, Zvezda, TNT, Moscow Media, Rossiya Segodnya, REN TV and others.

The assets of these companies are blocked, their economic and financial obligations are suspended and telecommunications services or the use of public telecommunications networks are restricted, suspended or terminated.

The sanctions are introduced in connection with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, its financing terrorism in Ukraine, which resulted in the occupation of a part of the country, numerous casualties, actual and potential threats to the national interests, national security and sovereignty, the authorities say.
