Ukraine arrests suspect of organising murder of activist Kateryna Handziuk

Ukrainian law enforcers have arrested the alleged organizer of murder of journalist Kateryna Handziuk, a journalist and activist who exposed corruption in her hometown of Kherson.

His name is Igor Pavlovsky, he is a former assistant of MP Mykola Palamarchuk (Petro Poroshenko Bloc ‘Solidarity’).

“The SBU detained him on Saturday on the suspicion he was an accomplice,” SBU Spokeswoman Olena Hitlianska told Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

In late July, an unidentified person poured concentrated sulfuric acid over Handziuk’s face not far from her house in Kherson. The woman who suffered severe chemical burns died in Kyiv on November, 4.

Pavlovsky was taken into custody; the crime he is suspected of is not bailable. Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and Prosecutor General’s Office continue to probe into the case.

There are five people arrested in the Handziuk case: Serhiy Torbin, the alleged organizer of the attack, whom, according to the investigators, Igor Pavlovsky handed over money on behalf of the instigator; Volodymyr Vasyanovich, Vyacheslav Vishnevsky, Viktor Gorbunov and alleged hitman Nikita Grabchuk. However, the contractor’s name has not been published yet. All the arrestees took part in the military actions in Donbas.

Earlier, president Petro Poroshenko urged law enforcement agencies to make every effort to solve the crime.
