No significant progress in Sheremet case -- Ukraine police

Head of the Ukraine’s National Police Khatia Dekanoidze said there was no significant progress in the investigation into the murder of prominent journalist Pavel Sheremet. However, she declined to provide any details of the investigation.

According to her, she was presented with a report on the state of the investigation.

“I cannot say that there is a major breakthrough, but there is a huge workload,” said Dekanoidze at a briefing on 19 August.

“I am totally against details of the investigation being disclosed by anyone: National Police, General Prosecutor’s Office, because it hinders the investigation. If we get something, you will be the first to know about it,” said Dekanoidze.

On August 10, Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said that the investigation into the murder of well-known Belarusian journalist Pavel Sheremet was advancing, but information about the case could not yet be published. “I know a lot about it, but I cannot share it with you. Actually, there is no information that can be published about Sheremet’s case. We have a significant progress in the investigation, but it is not for the public,” Ukrainian Truth quoted Lutsenko.

Earlier it was reported that the investigation was working on four versions of the murder: personal hostile relations with the deceased, professional activity, destabilization of the situation in Kyiv and the human error (car which was blown with Sheremet inside was owned by the owner of Internet publication “Ukrainian Truth” Olena Prytula).

The 44-year-old journalist of Belarusian origin Pavel Sheremet, who for the last five years had lived and worked in Ukraine, in Kyiv, died on the morning of July 20th in car explosion. The explosion occurred around 7:45 at the corner of Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Ivan Franko. According to law enforcement, the explosive had the power of 400-600 grams of TNT. The National Police of Ukraine opened a criminal case under article “deliberate murder.” The American FBI joined the investigation after they were asked for help by the Ukrainian authorities.

Pavel Sheremet was buried in the North Cemetery near Minsk on 23 July.
