People in protesting mood over Astravets NPP

People are unhappy over the construction of the Belarusian NPP. This year alone, there have been several accidents on the construction site – the last one occurred in July. As a result of it, there has been open discontent of the regular Belarusians and Lithuanian authorities. The opposition United Civil Party officially joined the fight against nuclear power.

The political council of the United Civil Party urged to stop construction of the Astravets NPP. The party considers the decision to construct the station to be politically motivated and not having economic viability.

“We believe building such facilities in the dictatorship, in the absence of public and parliamentary control is dangerous,” said Anatol Lyabedzka, leader of the United Civil Party.

Another reason for this appeal was a long-term silence of the authorities about the accidents occurring at the construction site. Incidents at nuclear power plants are recognized by relevant agencies with a two-week and sometimes even longer delay. Head of Belarus Alyaksandr Lukashenka has not spoken on the subject of accidents. Last time he mentioned the nuclear power plant was over a month ago, during the 5th All-Belarusian Assembly.

“What’s your proof?”

The incident with the fall of the reactor vessel happened almost a month ago, but no one saw the accident video recording, although, according to representatives of the state “Rosatom” corporation, personnel have the video at their disposal.

“The fact that it is hushed is bad, everyone says that it is dangerous,” she said

A similar opinion is shared by other Minsk citizens we surveyed at random. It is currently known that the construction works of the reactor vessel have been suspended until the Belarusian experts estimate the scale of damage.
