Trend holds: Brest riot police arrest pro-Russian author who called Belarus ‘mad pseudostate’

‘Alla Bron’, another vocal supporter of the so-called ‘Russian World’, who called Belarus a ‘mad pseudostate’ and the nation – ‘fictional’ has reportedly been detained on December, 6.

He wrote a number of incendiary articles for Russian chauvinistic website Regnum. According to the Belarusian newspaper Nasha Niva, it is Dzmitry Alimkin, a 45-year-old resident of Brest and former graduate of the Academy of Public Administration under the aegis of the President of the Republic of Belarus, who used to hide under the pseudonim ‘Alla Bron’.

Over the last years, Mr Alimkin has been a guard at a school. When writing his articles, he was in a contact with Yury Baranchik, the editor of the website ‘Empire’ and Regnum chief editor.

Alimkin was arrested by riot police on Wednesday morning in Brest, his flat was searched, the wife says.

Dzmitry Alimkin is suspected of committing crimes under Article 130 of the Belarusian Criminal Code (‘Incitement to racial, national or religious hatred or discord’). At the moment, he is being kept in one of Minsk-based detention centers. His wife refused to go into detail saying she had signed a pledge of secrecy.

As reported before, another author whose articles were published on controversial Russian websites was detained – Yury Paulavets, an assistant professor of humanities at the Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radio Electronics (BSUIR). Moreover, in November, Orthodox priest Kanstantsin Burykin who gained notoriety for his pro-Russian sentiment, was arrested by the Investigative Committee for illegal actions with regard to ammunition.

Not long ago Russian state media started blasting Belarus, but Belarus remained silent. Might the arrests have been a response to the information attack?
