Treason proven: Ukraine judges delivering verdict to Viktor Yanukovych

Ousted president Viktor Yanukovych’s guilty of treason and complicity in an aggressive war Russia is waging against Ukraine has been proven.

The verdict has not been voiced; the judges continue handing down the verdict in the courtroom.

“Despite a not guilty plea by the person accused, the court, having heard the testimony of witnesses, examined conclusions of experts, documents and material evidence, assessed the arguments of prosecution and defense, considers that the guilt of the accused in committing the crimes under Part 1 Article 111 (high treason), Part 5 Article 27, Part 2 Article 437 (complicity in conducting an aggressive war) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine is duly proved by relevant and admissible evidence,” news agency Unian quotes the judge.

Prosecutors demand that the court sentence Yanukovych to a 15-year prison term. Ukraine accused him of, among other things, an attempt to legitimize bringing Russian troops to Ukraine – in particular, to the Crimean peninsula. The politician signed the corresponding appeal on the same day when the Verkhovna Rada adopted the decision on releaving him of the presidential post.

Yanukovych in hospital

At the moment, Viktor Yanukovych is in Moscow. Previously, he participated in the sessions via Skype. Today, however, he has failed to get in touch. According to his lawyer Vitaly Serdyuk, his client has recently had surgery and is being after-cared now.

In November last year, Russian media reported that Yanukovych was hospitalized with suspected spine and knee injury which he got while playing tennis. Although Ukraine’s court allowed the defendant to make his last plea from his hospital bed, he failed to do so.
