Belarus independence restored 27 years ago today

For Belarusians, this day is the second most important after March 25, 1918.

On July 27, 1990, the Supreme Soviet of the BSSR adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the BSSR. It proclaimed the full sovereignty of the BSSR in its rule, independence and state power of the republic within the boundaries of its territory, the legitimacy of its laws and the independence of external relations.

On August 25, 1991, the Declaration received the status of the basic law, and it was it up to the adoption of the Constitution of Belarus in 1994.

According to social activist Vintsuk Vyachorka, July 27th is the intermediate stage of the return to independence, return to the ideals of the PRB.

“If there was a national system of education in Belarus, and the beginning of state’s restoration was taught, then everyone would know this chain: March 25, 1918; July 27, 1990; and finally August 25, 1991, when the decision on sovereignty in 1990 entered the status of the constitutional law,” said Vyachorka.

“When the people in power change — the date will change, too. July 27th will take its rightful place on the calendar,” deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the 12th convocation Mechyslau Hryb told Belsat.

From 1991 to 1996, the most important holiday of the country was Independence Day celebrated on July 27th. At the November referendum, more than 88% of voters were in favor of transferring Belarus’ Independence Day to July 3 — the day of liberation of Minsk from the Germans during the Second World War.
