Switzerland quits: 2021 hockey championship to be held in Belarus, Latvia

The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation has announced its decision not to apply to the International Ice Hockey Federation to move this year’s championship to 2021.

“All fans who bought tickets at the Organising Committee or via the official ticket seller Ticketcorner will receive a refund. Ticket purchasers will be informed by e-mail next week (4-8 May 2020) about the further procedure regarding the refund process,” the IIHF press service says.

As reported earlier, the 2020 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Zurich and Lausanne was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Consequently, the 2021 championship will take place in Minsk and Riga, as it was scheduled before.

By the moment, the Belarusian authorities have gained notoriety for being reluctant to accept WHO recommendations and cancel public gatherings such as sports competitions and military parades.
