Svetlana Alexievich's book in top three books of 21st century

The Guardian has compiled a list of the 100 best books of the 21st century. “Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich took the third place in the rating.

Published in 2013, the book is dedicated to the phenomenon of “Soviet person” and the trauma caused by the collapse of socialism.

The English translation was published by the American publishing house Random House. “Second-Hand Time” for several months was in the list of bestsellers of the New York Times, in the U.S., the book sold 6-8 thousand copies a week. The editor of the publishing house called it a universal story about human destinies which can fill gaps in the Americans’ ideas about the countries of the former Soviet Union.

Second place in the ranking of The Guardian was taken by the novel Gilead by American writer Marilynne Robinson, for which the author received a Pulitzer Prize.

First place went to Hilary Mantel’s novel “The WolfHall”, for which she received the Booker Prize.
