Students detained on 12 November kept in jail


According to “Students’ Initiative Group”, the jail term for student of BNTU Anastasia Bulibenka was prolonged for two more months, students Illya Trakhtenberg and Hleb Fitsner were added one month of detention each. The previously established two-month detention period expired on January 12.

Also, the term of arrest was extended to Alana Hebrymariam, graduate of BSMU, member of the Coordinating Council and representative of Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya on youth and student affairs.

On 12 November the repression bodies detained the leaders and activists of the Union of Belarusian Students, searches were conducted in the apartments of the members of the organization and in its office. The names of nine detained students:

  • Ksenia Syramalot
  • Kasia Budzko
  • Yana Arabeika
  • Yahor Kanetski
  • Hleb Fitzner
  • Illya Trachtenberg
  • Victoryia Hrankouskaya
  • Anastasiya Bulybenka

All of them are charged under part 1 of article 342 of the Criminal Code (“Organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them”). The maximum punishment under this article is three years of imprisonment. The detained activists of the Union of Belarusian Students have been recognized as political prisoners.

Criminal prosecutions for civic action affected 18 students or members of student organizations, 17 of whom remain behind bars. At least 90 more students were sentenced to administrative arrest.
