‘Still relevant’: Belarusian communists praising Stalin's heritage

On December 21, members of the Communist Party of Belarus (CPB) laid flowers at the monument to Joseph Stalin in the Stalin Line Museum near Minsk.

The Communists held a rally on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of his birth and praised the policy pursued by Stalin and ‘unique reforms’ that, according to them, were introduced at the suggestion of him.

Over thirty years of his rule, the politician had never cast a stone at his predecessors, Belarusian Stalinists claim. However, it is an open secret that even before the Great Terror of the 30s Stalin initiated the persecution of Trotsky’s adherers. Moreover, the representatives of the CPB believe that the USSR built about 9,000 enterprises thanks to Stalin; at the same time, they forget to focus on the contribution of the Gulag prisoners who often died when being involved in shock-work construction projects.

“[The heritage of] Comrade Stalin is relevant to these days: one should adopt the unique reforms of the Leninist-Stalinist modernization as well as those of Chinese communists who have transformed a backward country into an advanced power in the world over the past 70 years,” the CPB states.

The estimate by the human rights organization Memorial shows that from 12 to 38 million Soviet citizens, including prisoners of conscience, the executed and the exiled, might have fallen victims to the Stalinist regime.

As far as Belarus is concerned, there is no accurate information since the KGB archives remain closed. According to historians, 100,000 – 250,000 persons might have been killed only in Kurapaty, a mess execution site near Minsk.
