Opposition activists notify Minsk City Executive Committee of planned mass rally


Opposition politicians Mikalai Statkevich and Uladzimir Nyaklyayeu have notified Minsk city executive committee about their intention to hold a mass rally at the Kastrychnitskaya square on September 12. The relevant document was passed to the Minsk city executive committee On September 6.

It states that, in accordance with Article 55 of the Constitution of Belarus and international treaties signed by the country, Statkevich and Nyaklyayeu will hold a mass rally with the aim to demand “real elections instead of electoral farces regularly organized by the regime”. Start of the rally is scheduled for 18:00. Minsk City Executive Committee is invited to meet the requirements of the Constitution and ensure the smooth conduct of the rally.

In comments to BelaPAN Statkevich underlined that this document does not constitute an application for permission to hold a rally. “This is a notice of intention to hold it. The action will take place, they cannot prohibit it for me, I am not asking for permission,” said a former political prisoner.

On 11 September Belarus will hold elections to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the sixth convocation. Early voting began on 6 September.
