State TV ignoring Belarusian Nobel laureate. Belsat to air 2015 award ceremony

Belarusian writer Svetlana Alexievich will get the 2015 Nobel Prize in Literature at a ceremony that is to be held in Stockholm on December, 10 – on Human Rights Day.

Due to the author’s works, our country has become known all over the world, but Belarusian authorities keep turning a blind eye to her merits. Why is this happening? Why won’t state-run TV channels show the award ceremony?

Indifferent Belarusians who want to organise public readings of passages from books by Alexievich are posting information about their actions using the hashtag #nobelrazam.

“We will name venues, at least the venues that are ready to do it, in a Facebook group. It is the simplest idea. I know that residents of Vitsebsk will gather at some venues. In the near future we will give information on where such readings are to be held,” Tatsiana Vadalazhskaya, a representative of initiative ‘Flying University’, says.

As far as the state-controlled mass media are concerned, they continue to pursue the policy of ignoring Svetlana Alexievich. Belarusian TV has no plans to air the upcoming ceremony from Sweden. As follows from our survey, they are making a big mistake.

“Well, of course, it would be interesting to watch it, because it is a worldwide event which is really important. Truly great persons are awarded there. Looking at them, one can become better, “a passer-by told Belsat TV in a street interview.

“The event is of high importance for Belarus. I would like to view it. My friends and acquaintances are looking forward to watch it, too,”a woman said.

Before Svetlana Alexievich became a Nobel laureate, Lukashenka’s regime had not published her books. Furthermore, the head of state is never slow to downgrade her role:

“I will also speak about some of our ‘creators’, creative people, even Nobel Prize winners, who had barely received it when they left the country and tried to pour a bucket of mud on the country. This is wrong, this is not the opposition. This is absolutely wrong, because we cannot choose homeland, or parents, our mother. They are what they are. If you talk bad about homeland, if you are ashamed of it, then it is you who is a bad son,” Alyaksandr Lukashenka told about the first Belarusian who received the Nobel prize.

Why is the Belarusian leader giving her attitude?

“The Belarusian regime cannot stand people who are able to become any moral authority, especially since such people take issue with the government on a number of problems,” Tatsiana Vadalazhskaya adds.

But if there is any demand for information, supply will appear as well: Belsat TV is to televise the 2015 Nobel Prize Award ceremony. Our channel is also going to announce ‘The Week of Svetlana Alexievich’.
