Soviet style: Lukashenka warns kolkhozes against underperformance

At Tuesday’s meeting to discuss ways to improve the situation, President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has strongly recommended the agro-industrial enterprises of Vitsebsk region to start working more effectively.

In the contrary case, their debts (3 bn Belarusian rubles) would not be written off, the head of state warned.

“Debt forgiveness is out of the question. By all odds, one has to pay what they owe. Pay off your debts! The only thing we can do is to provide you with some safety valve so that you could get fresh air,” Lukashenka said.

The Belarusian leader also demanded a significant modernization of agriculture be carried out in Vitsebsk region. According to him, the local enterprises should not get stuck in crop farming; there is a need to focus on cattle breeding.

“Focusing on the needs and processers was the main thing we did right about Vitsebsk region. We have made collective farms (kolkhozes and sovkhozes) part of holding companies. Give us milk and meat. If they do not understand how much do you need, provide them with tasks, plans, forecasts so that they knew the volumes they need to provide the processing companies with. These plans need to meet your business activity in full so that you could pay off the debts,” state-run news agency BelTA quotes Lukashenka as saying.
