On February 20, a report on the probe into the murder of Boris Nemtsov was presented at the session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in Vienna; it is not ruled out that personal sanctions will be imposed on the persons allegedly involved in the crime and named in the report. According to the OSCE PA, the Russian authorities put every obstacle to conducting an impartial investigation. In turn, Russia’s State Duma has stated that the report does not have a ‘practical side’.

During Yeltsin’s presidency, Boris Nemtsov was Governor of Nizhny Novgorod region and then Deputy Prime Minister. From 2000 until his death, he had been a critic of President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin’s aggression on Ukraine. In 2017, a Russian court found five people (Zaur Dadayev, Anzor Gubashev, Shadid Gubashev, Temirlan Eskerkhanov, Khamzar Bakhayev) guilty of murdering Nemtsov; they were sentenced to prison terms of 11 to 20 years. The convicts had received 15 mln Russian rubles for killing Nemtsov, the investigators said.

It is still unknown who ordered and organized the assassination. The Russian leader’s minions might have had a hand in the crime, Nemtsov’s associates believe.
