Sad anniversary: 5 years ago Belarusian-born hero of Maidan died


Minsk activists have announced holding a memorial event to honour and remember Mikhail Zhyzneuski, a citizen of Belarus and Hero of Ukraine.

Five years ago, he was killed in the course of the Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv. He was only four days shy of his 26th birthday when he was shot in the heart. Armenian Sergei Nigoyan and Belarusian Mikhail Zhyzneuski became the first defenders of Euromaidan killed by pro-Yanukovych snipers who were dispersing protests on January, 22.

In June 2017, Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to Mikhail Zhyzneuski. In 2016, Ukraine’s Ministers Cabinet took the decision to pay a lifelong stipend to his parents. In November 2017, a monument to the hero of the Heavenly Hundred was opened in Hrushevsky street.

As the rally is timed to coincide with the 5th anniversary of his death, therefore, the format is expected to be mourning, Dzyanis Urbanovich, the leader of the youth organisationg Young Front, said.

“First, we will pray together, then people will make a speeches. We would like to remember not only Zhyzneuski, but other Belarusians who died for Ukraine – Ales Charkashyn and Vitaly Tsilizhenka. At the end of the action, we will sing the March of the Warriors. Earlier, we figured on coming to Mikhail’s grave in Homeil on Sunday, but then we opted for holding a rally in Minsk. It is an initiative of Young Front,” Urbanovich said.
