Russian providers to store all correspondence for special services

In Russia, on July 1, the so-called “Yarovaya Law” came into force, obliging Russian telecom operators and ISPs to store calls, letters, files, customer calls for six months.

All calls on a landline or mobile phone, all correspondence in messengers, chats or forums, all transferred files fall into the category. Internet providers will store all Internet traffic of their users.

Russian special services will get access to the correspondence and calls in the territory of the Russian Federation. However, for this they will need a court order. The main role here is played by the FSB. This body will receive the keys to decipher the correspondence.

It is not yet known whether the new law will be implemented by large foreign social networks and instant messengers (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp, Viber).

The “Yarovaya Law” has repeatedly been criticized also for the fact that storage of large data sets requires large-scale financial costs.
