Russian citizenship without language exam: Belarusians, Ukrainians eligible

Russia’s Interior Ministry has put forward the initiative to excuse citizens of Ukraine and Belarus from the language assessment when they apply for Russian citizenship.

“There has been a proposal to exempt citizens of Ukraine and Belarus from appearing before the commission to confirm their knowledge of the Russian language. We believe that this initiative (the bill has already been drafted)… will develop,” Olga Kirillova, a representative of the Ministry of Interior, said at the recent meeting of the Presidential Council on Civil Society and Human Rights.

Kirillova also spoke in favour of the return to the practice of issuing long-term residence permits.

“Earlier, a residence permit holder could live all their life [in the country that issued the document – belsat.eu]. Now we grant a residence permit for five years, it is non-renewable,” she added.
