Russian citizenship: Dropping barriers for Belarusians, Ukrainians


The Russian authorities are working on easing the process of obtaining Russian citizenship by, among others, Belarusian nationals, the newspaper Izvestia reports with reference to Valentina Kazakova, Head of the Migration Department of Russia’s Interior Ministry.

“The simplification of the procedures of gaining citizenship by our compatriots, citizens of Ukraine and Belarus. We want to exempt them from appearing before the commission to confirm their knowledge of the Russian language,” Kazakova said.

According to her, the ministry is also nurturing a plan to liberalize the process of granting citizenship to the nationals of Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan and Belarus who are not ethnic Russians.

The number of the foreign residents who seek to being admitted into Russian citizenship is constantly growing, the top official stressed.
