Russian border guards attempt to detain Nadiya Savchenko’s sister

Last night Vira Savchenko, a sister of Ukrainian MP and pilot Nadiya Savchenko, was close to being detained by Russian border guards at the Chertkovo checkpoint (Rostov region).

According to the Russian side, Vira was put on a federal wanted list for insulting of judge in Chechnya. As she was in a car with diplomatic automobile plates, the Russians did not dare to arrest her – this would violate diplomatic immunity; in fact, consuls ‘won Vira away’ from them, Nadiya Savchenko’s lawyer Ilya Novikov said.

Now Vira Savchenko is at the Consulate General of Ukraine in Rostov-on-Don, she managed to get her passport back, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe Dmytro Kuleba told Interfax Ukraine.

“Now the most crucial step is to taking Vira out of Russia,” he said.

On Wednesday Vira Savchenko said in a televised interview that her sister Nadiya started to fill out documents in order to be extradited to Ukraine.
