Russia to hold biggest military drills since 1981

The drill Vostok-2018 will involve 36 thousand tanks, armored personnel carriers, and other equipment, more than a thousand helicopters and aircraft, and almost 300 thousand soldiers.

Military maneuvers will be held from 11 to 15 September. They will involve troops of the Eastern and Central Military Districts, as well as the forces of the Northern and Pacific Fleets and the Airborne Forces, the Russian Defense Ministry reports.

Before the exercises, Vladimir Putin announced an inspection of the combat capability of the Russian army.

The press service of the Russian Defense Ministry notes that the exercise Vostok-2018 in scale is comparable to the exercise Zapad-81 (held on the territory of the USSR and the Warsaw Treaty countries). The final stage of the Zapad-81 was the landing of the 7th Guards Airborne Division at the training ground near Minsk.

Vostok-2018 will be held with the participation of Chinese and Mongolian soldiers.
