Diplomats are seeking meetings with two Russian citizens who were placed in detention by Belarusian security forces in the wake of the accident that occured on July, 3. The Russian Embassy is also set to hire lawyers.
As reported earlier, during the Independence Day celebration in Minsk, fireworks exploded; a 64-year-old woman was killed and about ten persons were injured. The fireworks bought in Russia are reported to be of poor quality; the Belarusian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case and detained two suspects.
Konstantin Denisov, 28, and Maxim Sapronov, 25, arrived in Belarus to provide technical assistance in preparation for the holiday fireworks. Their actions show signs of a crime under Part 2 of Article 299 of the Criminal Code (violation of the rules of handling explosive substances and pyrotechnic products, resulting in death by negligence).
According to the Investigative Committee, the representatives of the supplier’s company violated the order of work with fireworks in the process of charging the fireworks and made a mechanical impact on the pyrotechnic charges while loading the mortars, which is not provided for by the rules of their handling.
“At the moment, the embassy staff are addressing this issue. We are employing lawyers; we have also asked Minsk’s permission to see our citizens. We will make every effort to ensure the observance of their legal rights,” Sergei Arayev, Spokesman for the Russian Embassy in Minsk, told Belsat.
It should be noted the Belarusian leader has not commented on the tragedy or offered condolences to the family of the victim yet.
