Russia’s prosecutor asks for 23 years in prison for Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko


Prosecutor’s Office of the Russian Federation has asked for 23 years in prison and a 100,000-ruble fine (about $1,400) for Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko on Wednesday.

According to the prosecutor, Savchenko’s ‘active role’ in the murder of Russian TV reporters Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin is an aggravation. At the same time, ‘an attempt to kill civilians of Luhansk region’ was removed from the indictment.

Russian investigators believe that Nadiya Savchenko spied upon a group of civilians which included Russian journalists. After she passed the information collected to Aydar battalion, a gun battle took place, in which two Russians died.

Savchenko’s lawyers state that at the moment shelling the defendant was in captivity in Russia and, consequently, she was not able to regulate fire.

The trial of Savchenko started In September, 2015. The Ukrainian pilot is accused of murdering Russian journalists and illegal border crossing. In her turn, the woman denies any wrongdoing. According to Savchenko and her lawyers, she was abducted by force and transported to Russia. Earlier Vladimir Markin, a repreentative of Russia’s Investigative Committee, said that Savchenko faced up to 25 years in prison.
