Russia’s presidential wannabe Sobchak: Crimea is Ukraine’s, and that’s that!

Russia’s annexation of Crimea was the violation of the Budapest Memorandum, TV anchor and journalist Ksenia Sobchak, who has recently announced her intention to run for presidency, says.

“In accordance with international law, Crimea is Ukraine’s, and that’s that!” Sobchak said at today’s press conference.

The Budapest Memorandum that gave assurances of the territorial integrity of Ukraine in exchange for nuclear disarmament was signed in 1994. Three nuclear powers – Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States – were guarantors. However, Vladimir Putin said in 2014 that the document lost its legal force as an ‘anti-constitutional coup’ had taken place in Kyiv and the agreement had been concluded with the ‘legitimate’ government.

According to Sobchak, Russia shoud negotiate with Ukraine because the neighbouring country is an ‘important partner’. The probable candidate stressed the urgent need of making the list of Russian and Ukrainian citizens convicted for political grounds and pressing for their release.

Ksenia Sobchak announced her bid to seek presidency on October 18. However, she promised to withdraw from the election if opposition politician Alexei Navalny was registered a presidential candidate.
