Russia promises ‘effective’ tit-for-tat measures against US base in Poland

Russia and Belarus do have all that is needed to respond to would-be deploying a US military base in Poland, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko states.

Russia and Belarus “have the potential, military and technical facilities that would allow to guarantee both defense capability and security interests – whatever happens, in any possible scenario,” news agency Interfax quotes the top official.

According to him, Russia’s response to putting a US base in place in Poland will be ‘effective and not very expensive’.

“This will be evidence of the fact that the countries inviting foreign forces to their territory not only fail to strengthen their security, but expose themselves to increased risk,” Grushko said.

At the same time, the the diplomat did not specify which steps Russia and Belarus will take. He recommended journalists to ask the military for details.

As reported earlier, Poland has been lobbying for a permanent US base amid concerns over Russian aggression. In September, Polish President Andrzej Dudaand US President Donald Trump met in the White House. One of the key issues discussed was the location of a US military base in Poland.
